Potter-Belmar Labs

"Potter-Belmar Labs is taking their live cinema performance "Fortune"
to the U.S. West Coast in May 2008! Traveling by train, this pair of
itinerant 21st Century-style magic lantern story-tellers invites the
audience to participate in a collective fortune-telling experiment,
presented as a multimedia performance of sound and moving image. This
tour is funded, in part, by a generous MetLife Creative Connections
grant
from Meet the Composer.
Each Fortune performance is made up of a series of reconfigurable
scenes in sound and image. Every vignette illustrates or evokes a
particular state of being, such as "exuberance," or "grogginess." The
audience determines the selection and arrangement of the vignettes,
ensuring that no performance is like any other.
PBL mixes original and sampled music, sound and moving image,
utilizing laptops and other electronic devices, producing a unique,
live multimedia experience. Original sound and image compositions are
interwoven with samples and soundscapes, generating a tapestry of
allusion, abstract narration, and dreamlike hallucination.
"Fortune" demonstrates a contemporary spin on the ancient and
universal traditions of fortune telling, using audience input to
generate a dreamlike narrative of sound and moving image, encouraging
viewers to make their own associations and relationships to broaden
perspectives on their immediate, individual situations as well as the
overall collective state of the gathered audience. "Fortune" may be
described as a multimedia Tarot reading--though we make no
presumptions regarding fate or destiny. Similar to the way the
sleeping brain--to better inform our waking lives--seeks hidden
patterns by mixing and matching its memories and feelings, our goal is
to suggest fresh reference points and surprising connections."

In Crowd Control, artist and composer Chris Kubick's creates a complex
and impressionistic sensory experience from recordings, photographs
and textual descriptions of crowds. Kubick has a home-brewed crowd
machine, which responds to the rythm of his claps, and challenges him
with claps and crowds of his own. Together, he and the crowd machine
improvise a thoroughly overwhelming and unconstrained montage of
thousands of tightly controlled, swarming sounds and images. The
resultant performance is enough to make any crowd lose control.
